PRINCIPLE OF DEFENCE IN FOOTBALL

by

From start to the final whistle of the game, the keeper is hard at work during the run of play. Outfield players are reacting to runs and movement and to the ball being played from one player to the next. The information communicated by the keeper is to be short and concise, especially when it comes to the principle of defending, the keeper must keep the following fundamental principle of defence in mind as he or she organise the defence during the match:

*Firstly -to put pressure on the ball handler. (An effective defense requires that’s there’s always pressure on the opponent who has the ball)

*Second-to defend from inside out. (meaning close down the most dangerous lanes and force the opponent to attack where the defence team is well positioning thwart the foray)

*Third -to stay compact with good communication and cooperate. (The correct distance between backs to midfielders to forwards is 35 yards from back to front and defenders should track runners off the ball until the keeper or teammate tells them to release them)

*Fourth -Patience. (Don’t overcommit and get burned)

*Fifth -Focus. (Maintain your concentration and composure)
